Jake had told Steve that he planned on invading Thomas’ life, but he hadn’t been all that serious and right in the head at that time. The current situation had happened by accident, one that seemed fortunate for Jake, and he once again considered leaving some of his belongings somewhere in the room.

Several hours after Thomas had left, Jake finally finished his project. He stretched and groaned at the pain in his muscles and wished Thomas could give him a massage right then and there. But Thomas wasn’t at home, so Jake cleaned up the mess he had made and crashed onto Thomas’ bed. He squeezed the pillow close to him and fell asleep inhaling the strong scent left on it. Thomas smelled like a mixture of essential oils, cigarettes and lit candles. It was obvious why he smelled like essential oils and cigarettes, but Jake thought the lit candles smell probably came from Thomas just naturally smelling like warmth, calmness and comfort.

Later, he woke up to the sound of Thomas changing clothes and cursed himself for not waking up a minute earlier.

“Sorry for waking you.”

“Thomas!”

“Yeah?”

“I’m done! The deadline for the draft is Monday morning, but I finished all the editing today. I’ll just send it in like this and see what changes are requested.”

“Wow, good job! You were really fast.”

“I wanted to finish early so I could spend whatever free time you have left this weekend with you.”

“Well, how about we start by getting something into our stomachs? I brought Chinese and Indian food. You can have whichever you like more.”

“Or we can both have half of each.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

They ate while talking about random things and, later, Jake followed Thomas out on the balcony for a smoke.

“Can I have one?” Jake asked.

“No.” Jake was slightly shocked by the attitude with which Thomas refused him, but then Thomas turned to him smiling and said, “You can have one if you really want to, but you shouldn’t pick up such an unhealthy habit just for social purposes.”

“Then I’ll just hang out here with you and enjoy the fresh air.”

“There’s also a thing called secondhand smoking.”

“Are you trying to subtly tell me to leave you alone here?”

“No. I’m just a bit under the weather and I don’t think I’ll make good company.”

“Rough day?”

“It was fine till I got to the center.”

“What happened?”

“A woman killed herself there today.”

“Oh, my God…”

“She couldn’t stay at the center much longer and it didn’t look like she could start a normal life after leaving there. She was too afraid of going back to the hellhole she’d recently run away from, so…that happened.”

“Can… Can I ask you something?”

Thomas was silent for a moment before he answered. “Go ahead.”

“Why do you often go to this place where you see so many sad things?”

“Because I want to help those people as much as I can. I was also helped out, but it’s not just about me trying to give back what I got. I just wanna stop some of the suffering.
